Polsinelli recently added shareholder John T. Woodruff to its expanding Tax practice in the firm’s Houston office. Woodruff brings two decades of experience providing strategic, practical and efficient guidance to clients involved in complex tax matters.

“John’s in-depth experience representing multinational clients in the energy industry will be a valuable addition to our thriving Houston office,” said Bill Sanders, chair of Polsinelli’s national Tax practice. “Working in both private practice and major accounting firms, John has gained a deep understanding of how to successfully protect the best interests of clients with a wide range of complex tax issues. His credentials complement our firm’s overall capabilities and the high quality of service we strive to provide, and we are excited to have him join our team.”

Woodruff counsels a broad range of companies on all aspects of international tax, transfer pricing and tax issues related to cross-border mergers, acquisitions and restructurings. He regularly advises clients on issues related to the U.S. foreign tax credit, U.S. trade or business/permanent establishment determinations, treaty-based positions, transfer pricing strategies and strategic tax-related planning for international investments and financings.

Demonstrating his particular focus on energy companies, Woodruff has represented clients with tax issues involving exploration and production, oil field services, offshore drilling, maritime, oil field manufacturing and engineering, procurement and construction.

“John has an outstanding reputation not only in Houston but throughout the nation,” said Greg Novak, managing partner in Polsinelli’s Houston office. “His successful track record working on some of the most challenging and complex tax issues in the energy industry will undoubtedly contribute to Polsinelli’s continued, dynamic growth in the oil-centric city of Houston and across Texas. Additionally, John's experience in transfer pricing issues and structuring offshore holding companies meets our growing demand in advising clients on the effective management of their critical intellectual property assets on a more global basis.”

A prominent leader in the Houston legal community, Woodruff currently serves as the Chair of the Tax Section of the Houston Bar Association and has served on a variety of committees including the Tax Sections of the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association. In addition to being a co-founder of the Houston Global Tax Symposium, Woodruff is also involved with the Houston International Tax Forum, Houston Tax Roundtable and World Affairs Council of Greater Houston and regularly assists the Houston Chapter of Tax Executives Institute to provide quality tax programs to tax executives in the Houston area.

Woodruff earned a Master of Laws from Georgetown University, his J.D. from the University of Tulsa College of Law and completed his bachelor’s degree at Oklahoma State University.
