Alex Popov Joins Carlyle Group as Managing Director

Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG) today announced that Alex Popov is joining the firm as a Managing Director to lead the credit opportunities business within the Global Credit platform. Mr. Popov, who has 20 years of experience investing in the corporate credit and real estate spaces, comes to Carlyle from HPS Investment Partners, formerly known as Highbridge Principal Strategies, where he was a Managing Director from 2008 to 2016. He will be based in New York.

Mark Jenkins, Carlyle Managing Director and Head of Global Credit, said, “Alex is an experienced leader with an exceptional investment track record. The opportunistic credit space is a critical part of the buildout of our global credit platform.”

Mr. Popov said, “I look forward to working with Mark and the team to expand Carlyle’s capabilities in the opportunistic credit space, leveraging Carlyle’s existing strengths, both in global credit and across the firm.”

Prior to joining HPS in 2008, Mr. Popov worked at Oaktree Capital Management focusing on credit investments across various sectors. Earlier in his career, Mr. Popov worked at American Capital Strategies and the investment bank Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Mr. Popov earned an MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University.

Carlyle’s global credit businesses, with assets of approximately $29 billion at March 31, 2017, include: Loans & Structured Credit, Private Credit, Energy Credit and Distressed Credit. Those businesses have more than 100 investment professionals in New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Hong Kong, and London.
