6/19/17

The State Bar of Texas and Legal Services to the Poor in Civil Matters Committee chose Jones Day to receive the coveted 2017 W. Frank Newton Award, citing the Firm’s commitment to the provision of legal services to the poor as “truly exceptional.”

The award, to be announced at the State Bar of Texas Annual Convention on June 22, 2017, was accepted by Hilda C. Galvan, Partner-in-Charge of the Dallas Office. Named for W. Frank Newton, former Dean of Texas Tech University School of Law and long-time pro bono advocate, the award recognizes the pro bono contributions of a law firm whose members have made outstanding contributions in providing legal services to the poor.

In its nomination of Jones Day, Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas cited the Firm’s long history of pro bono work in all of its locations. Particular Jones Day representations highlighted were the Firm’s representation of unaccompanied children and mothers immigrating to the United States; the development of VetLex, the first national and central resource allocated to legal service referrals for veterans; representation of indigent litigants in the Texas Supreme Court seeking to block the collection of unjust court costs; and the Clemency Project.

With its singular tradition and widely recognized record of client service, Jones Day provides formidable legal talent across multiple disciplines and jurisdictions through the seamless collaboration of a true partnership that shares fundamental professional values. Spread across five continents, Jones Day has more than 2,500 lawyers in 44 offices located in major centers of business and finance around the world.
