Jones Day Inspires Houston Students to Pursue Careers in Law

4/29/17

Spearheaded by the global law firm Jones Day, Pathways to Law is a supplemental learning program for students in the Houston area with the primary goal being to expand students’ horizons and equip them with tools to excel in high school, college, and beyond. The program also aims to inspire students to consider careers in law and other professions. The program currently takes place at Thomas J. Pilgrim Academy, a Houston ISD school in southwest Houston, where 97% of the 1,127 students are economically disadvantaged and 93% are Hispanic.

Each Monday, Jones Day lawyers and program sponsor Jim Teater, a retired Jones Day partner, go to Pilgrim Academy to teach on subjects ranging from educational and professional development to the Bill of Rights. Each class is designed to encourage students to work hard and aspire for professional careers, especially in law. The Pathways program also incorporates several field trips with previous destinations including the University of Houston Law Center, the Texas Fourteenth Court of Appeals, Jones Day Houston, and Marathon Oil Company.

This semester, the students have learned about the principles of the Fourth Amendment and applied them in various cases. On Tuesday May 2, students will be presenting oral arguments and taking on the role of either prosecution or defense and decide whether or not a person’s Fourth Amendment rights have been violated in front of teachers and staff, their peers and Jones Day lawyers.
