Stantec Receives a Top Design Award for District-wide STEAM Center in Texas

4/20/17

Stantec Architecture has received national recognition for its design of Robert R. Shaw Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in Katy, Texas, an education facility that sets a bold new direction for K-12 learners. The district-wide facility received a Citation of Excellence from Learning by Design, an annual juried awards program featuring the nation’s most engaging and enriching learning environments.

The 24,000-square foot Shaw Center for STEAM, centrally located in Katy Independent School District (ISD), is a free-standing building adjacent to the district’s CTE Center. Initially envisioned to be a permanent home for the district’s robust robotics program, the Shaw Center evolved into a highly connected, transparent learning environment where all Katy ISD students can engage in a range of STEAM-related activities including robotics, forensics, building sound cannons and catapults, and young inventors and arts camps.

The facility contains eight project bays that provide learners with design/build space; a centralized high bay space that is used daily for project testing and demonstrations, community events and presentations, and district staff development; and flex classroom space that affords further opportunities for collaboration and instruction. Transparency into these spaces puts learning on display, sparking curiosity and enticing students to explore their passion. The design also allows for future expansion as interest in build space and STEAM learning continues to grow.

The building is recognized as a Texas Collaborative for High Performance School (TX-CHPS) designed facility, resulting in a healthier and more efficient learning environment, improved student performance, and reduced environmental impact and operating expenses.

Stantec Architecture also received a 2017 Learning by Design Grand Prize award for Frederick County Middle School in Winchester, Virginia. The project was one of three selected for the Grand Prize because it exemplifies contemporary design and architectural standards.
