* The University of Houston prevailed in a trademark infringement lawsuit against the South Texas College of Law, which had sought to rename itself Houston College of Law. In the end, the new name chosen was South Texas College of Law Houston.
* The unexpected death of Justice Antonin Scalia while on a hunting trip in Texas created a void that hung over the U.S. Supreme Court throughout 2016 and affected three hot-button Texas cases,
* After more than a year battling federal securities fraud allegations, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton saw the charges against him dismissed. The relief was short-lived, with charges refiled just two weeks later.
* Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick led efforts to block an executive order requiring all public schools to adopt policies that would allow students to use the bathroom that matched their gender identity.
