Calpine Corporation (NYSE:CPN) is a Delaware corporation, which was established in 1984. It is an independent wholesale power generation Company engaged in the ownership and operation of natural gas-fired and geothermal power plants in North America. It has competitive power markets in the U. The company is expected to report a loss when it announces its fourth quarter earnings on Friday, February 10, 2012.

Expectations: Analysts predict a loss of 5 cents per share, a drop from a profit of 11 cents a year ago. The consensus estimate is down from three months ago when it was a loss of 3 cents, but is unchanged over the past month. Analysts are projecting earnings of 13 cents per share for the fiscal year. Revenue is expected to surpass the year-earlier total of $1.47 billion by 13.5%, finishing at $1.67 billion for the quarter. The company is expected to report revenue of $7.05 billion for the fiscal year.

Performance: Calpine's profit in the last quarter followed losses in the three previous quarters. The company reported a profit of $190 million in the third quarter, a loss of $70 million in the second quarter, a loss of $297 million in the first and a loss of $24 million in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. Revenue has been growing for the past two consecutive quarters. It rose 3.7% to $2.21 billion in third quarter. In the previous quarter, the figure rose 14.2%y. Since November 9, 2011, the stock price has dipped 1% to $14.82 from $14.97. Calpine's best recent streak was when its price gained $1.53 per share between December 12, 2011 and December 29, 2011.

Ratings: Analysts have grown a bit more optimistic about the stock, as the number of buy ratings has inched up over the past three months.
