Southwestern Energy (NYSE:SWN) is an independent company mainly engaged in natural gas and crude oil exploration, development and production within the United States. The company is scheduled to report its fourth quarter earnings on Monday, February 27, 2012.

Expectations: Analysts are expecting the company to report earnings of 48 cents per share, up 11.6% from a year ago, when it reported earnings of 43 cents per share. The consensus estimate remains unchanged over the past month, but it has decreased from three months ago when it was 51 cents. Analysts are projecting earnings of $1.85 per share for the fiscal year. The company's revenue is expected to beat the year-earlier total of $670.4 million by 10.3% to finish at $739.6 million for the quarter. Revenue for the fiscal year is expected to be $2.86 billion.

Performance: Revenue has risen in each of the last four quarters. It increased 12.5% to $767.3 million in the third quarter. Prior to that, the figure rose 29.7% in the second quarter, 1.2% in the first quarter and 7.4% in the fourth quarter of the last fiscal year. The company has been profitable for the last eight quarters; profit has risen year-over-year by an average of 5.1% over the most recent four quarters. The company enjoyed the boost in the second quarter when net income expanded 37.2%, marking the biggest gain. The stock price has risen slightly over the past quarter, from $35.03 on November 25, 2011 to its current price, $35.30. Southwestern Energy Company's worst recent stretch was when its stock price fell $3.26 per share between December 9, 2011 and December 14, 2011.

Ratings: Analysts are slightly more optimistic about the stock recently, as the number of buy ratings has risen slightly over the past three months.
